Open Call for the Winter School on Non-Proliferation and Nuclear Disarmament

The Winter School on non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament organized by Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Kazakhstan (FES Kazakhstan) is a program that aims to engage young scholars to discuss nuclear policy issues relevant to Kazakhstan and the international community.

The school will cover key topics in the nuclear policy field, including the history of nuclear weapons programs, the impact of nuclear testing on humans and the environment, current nuclear nonproliferation challenges, and Kazakhstan’s nuclear diplomacy and peaceful nuclear program. The school will also provide a networking opportunity with peers and experts. 

The school will take place from September 30th to October 1st, 2022, in Astana, Kazakhstan. 

FES Kazakhstan will cover accommodation and transport costs for participants coming from outside Nur-Sultan. 

Eligibility: 

  • Undergraduate or graduate students and/or young researchers (under the age of 35);
  • Interest in non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament issues; 
  • Citizenship of the Republic of Kazakhstan or the status of a resident of the Republic of Kazakhstan;
  • Upon completion of the school, participants are required to write and submit to FES a brief analytical piece based on the school experience.

Application procedure: 

1. Submit the following documents by email to info@fes.kz: 

  • Motivational letter (no more than 250 words);
  • CV/Résume (max. 2 pages).

Applications can be submitted in Kazakh, Russian, or English before 7 PM (Almaty time) August 29th, 2022.

The results will be announced on September 8th, 2022.
