On May 22 the iconic Soviet film, Turksib, will be screened at Central Hall Westminster in London. Director Victor Turin’s film (1929) will be accompanied by the original music specially written for the project by composer Kuat Shildebayev, performed by Camerata Kazakhstan Chamber orchestra (artistic director — Gaukhar Murzabekova).

Previously Turksib multimedia project was demonstrated at Dovzhenko Centre (Kiev, Ukraine) with original music by Bronnt Industries Kapital (UK) and Kazakh State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet named after Abay (Almaty, Kazakhstan) with Kuat Shildebayev’s music performed by Camerata Kazakhstan.

About the film:

Turksib is one of the first films ever made on the territory of Kazakhstan. The film is notable for the bright ground-breaking style of the director Victor Turin and Vostokkino studio’s directors of photography Yevgeny Slavinsky and Boris Frantsisson. Iskander Tynyshpayev, the founder of the school of camerawork and professional documentary filmmaking in Kazakhstan, participated in the making of the film as well.

Turksib had a significant influence on the world cinematography. This unique film tells a story of building the railway that connected Central Asia and Siberia. The film entered the list of fifty key documentary films in the history of world cinematography.

About the composer:

Author of the music, Kuat Shildebayev, is an outstanding Kazakh composer, author of symphonic, and experimental musical compositions, author of soundtracks to several dozens of movies by Kazakhstani and European directors, composer of Batyrkhan Shukenov’s album ‘Otan Ana’.

About the orchestra:

State ensemble of classical music “Camerata Kazakhstan” was established in 1997. The orchestra includes young, talented musicians, many of whom are laureates of international festivals and competitions.
